The cost of global warming will run into trillions of pounds and the environmental and social costs will be incalculable, a survey has revealed. The survey highlights the enormous costs that would result if Governments allow temperatures to rise by more than two degrees. The report also reveals the comparatively small amounts of money needed to keep temperatures in check.

A fisheries organisation for the protection of marine resources along the coastlines of Namibia, Angola and South Africa has banned shark finning. It has also placed a moratorium on all fishing in several areas for the next four years. The South Eastern Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (Seafo) adopted several urgent conservation measures during its third annual general meeting last Thursday. Seafo was established in March 2004 Angola and Namibia are members, as well as some of the countries fishing in the area, like Norway and some EU countries.

The United Nations needs to stop the destruction of deep sea ecosystems by banning fishermen from trawling nets on the ocean floor, Australia, New Zealand and Palau have said. The 192-member United Nations General Assembly is debating an Australian-led plan to ban deep sea bottom trawling in unmanaged high seas and impose tougher regulation of other destructive fishing practices. The White House and the European Commission Executive will support the ban.

Frustrated by their government's position on the environment, climate change and stem cell research, a group of US scientists have decided to take matters into their own hands and actively promote the election of a president in 2008 who is more receptive to science.
Scientists and Engineers for America says that "scientists and engineers have a right, indeed an obligation, to enter the political debate when the nation's leaders systematically ignore scientific evidence and analysis."
